NEOM Project

Read here. In this blog we are heading back to Saudi Arabia where I got to bring the XC bolting team back, this time for a commercial related project. The project, NEOM, is located in the far north-west corner of Saudi Arabia and means “new future.” According to the website NEOM “is a bold and audacious dream…a vision of what a New Future might look like”. The official launch party was just as bold as their dream and I am very proud to have been able to involve the XC Bolting Team! The Request: Bring a team to the wilderness in NEOM to prepare a sport climb on which two “well known international climbers” would climb LIVE. The route should be objectively aesthetic, challenging and...

Saudi Bolting Project

The Saudi Bolting Project is the first major initiative of the recently created Saudi Climbing Federation. The Project: to professionally equip the first major sport climbing sites in Saudi Arabia. To the uninitiated, discussions of Saudi Arabia conjure imagery of arid desert landscapes, camels and perhaps also a harsh people. Read knows better, having lived next door in Oman for 9 years. When the Saudi Climbing Federation approached him to lead a team of equippers he was very excited. Along with us "Team Explore Climbing" - Read and Alex, we had accomplished climbers and great people, Piergiorgio Lotito A.Guida Alpina, and A.Guida Alpina and Explore Climbing athlete Carlo Giuliberti - the team's rope gun. We had the privilege to call two spectacular locations "home" for...

XC ProEvo Hangboard
In 2018 we have teamed up with Spit Magazine to bring you training beta to motivate and educate climbers about training tools, methods and offer some training inspiration for your own sessions. In this one, Volume 4, published in Spit Magazine n.7 June/July 2018 we highlight the hangboard, nigh ubiquitous in all gyms and many climbers' home. The Hangboard The concept of hanging from small edges, pockets and pinches is as old as training for elite rock climbing itself. Although the precise inventor of the modern hangboard as we know it is unknown, as early as the ‘80s legendary pioneers of hard climbing, the likes of John Bachar in America and Jerry Moffat and Wolfgang Güllich in Europe were screwing small pieces of wood onto...

XC Training Lab Series Vol. 3

Explore Climbing XC Pegboards detail
In 2018 we have teamed up with Spit Magazine to bring you training beta to motivate and educate climbers about training tools, methods and offer some training inspiration for your own sessions. In this one, Volume 3, published in Spit Magazine n.6 May/June 2018 we highlight the XC PegBoard. XC Pegboard In this edition of the Explore Training Series we move on to the pegboard, which at a glance is self explanatory: pull up on the pegs, remove one arm and insert the pegs ever higher on the board. So, not only does the pegboard work our major muscle groups used for lock offs, but it takes a considerable amount of coordination to effectively move upwards and across the board. You may remember these from...
